READING OF ENSEMBLE
Peter’s new draft of his play is set in a fictional theatre in 1990, after the excitement of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and before German reunification. This is a time between things, a time where for everyone nothing is known. For some of the theatre practitioners, it is a moment of opportunity and reinvention, of the future suddenly becoming a place of possibility after so many years of stagnation. For others, the future is a terrifying vacuum and the present is full of fear, loss and guilt. The questions for the director, the dramaturge, the actors and the stage manager is what is the theatre actually for? What do they programme? What do they rehearse? As they try out material for their show, old wars, suspicions and accusations rise to the surface…
Time: 14:00 – 15:30, Wednesday 12 August
Venue: The Project Room, 50 George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LH

THEATRE CENSORSHIP NOW
After the reading of Peter’s play, join us for a roundtable discussion of contemporary experiences of theatre censorship. Peter and Laura will be joined by Lisa Goldman and Julia Farrington. Lisa will be speaking from her experience as a dramaturg, director and writer. She directed Behud by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, a play written in response to the cancellation of Behzti at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 2004. Lisa also made the first London invitation to the Belarus Free Theatre, with their productions Being Harold Pinter and Generation Blue Jeans. Julia Farrington is Associate Arts Producer for Index on Censorship and an associate of Vivarta, a digital media news lab and advocate for free expression rights.
