Autumn-Winter 2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

‘Earlier this autumn I was fortunate enough to make a visit to the archives to support my ongoing illustration work on Scottish folklore. I chose to look at Mackenzie\u2019s illustrated book Wonder Tales from Scottish Myth and Legend<\/em> (1917). My aim was to expand upon the bank of imagery that I have collected so far in order to enable the illustrations I make to become richer and more confident in my portrayal of the stories. Sentences such as: \u201cThe grey sea fairies have grey skin-coverings and resemble seals\u201d and \u201cOn moonlit nights they hear the mermaids\u2019 singing on the rocks when human beings are fast asleep\u2026\u201d (p.138) provide me with a more vivid picture of the settings and characters in the stories. I am then able to distil these ideas and impressions into individual images which I make into prints using linocut blocks, some of which I also include in this section of the SELCIE sketchbook’.<\/p>\n

Summer 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0sketches below examine\u00a0the illustration within British collections of fairy tales published\u00a0from\u00a0the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The sketches explore how\u00a0various\u00a0folktales originating in\u00a0a range of\u00a0diverse\u00a0traditions were appropriated for a Western audience.\u00a0Katie is interested in how\u00a0story binds identity to place, an idea which she\u00a0pursues in her own artwork and research.<\/p>\n
