“Language Lessons on the NHS?” 11th August 2016 at 3pm (Standard in the Square, Venue 372)
Dr Thomas H Bak is doing a language-related show at the Edinburgh Fringe (Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas).
Description
Research shows that learning languages helps us age healthily, even if we start learning them in later life. Being able to speak two languages can delay the onset of dementia symptoms by four to five years (more than any available drug!) and improve how well a patient recovers their mental abilities after a stroke. So is language learning a safer, cheaper and healthier alternative to the drugs routinely prescribed on the NHS? And, if so, shouldn’t we prescribe language lessons instead? Join Thomas Bak, who has spent decades researching dementia, stroke and ageing, to debate.
